Climate Change’s Impact on Worker Financial Security

Categories: Workplace

Climate change is impacting the world, putting an additional financial burden on those with the fewest resources to manage financial and life stressors. In 2022, the U.S. experienced 18 separate climate disasters, each costing more than $1 billion in damages and totaling close to $200 billion. In general, climate change disproportionately impacts communities who are more likely to be lower income, have fewer access to resources, and live in frontline communities (i.e., coastal areas).

In new research, Commonwealth reports on the financial impact of climate change on the lives of workers earning low and moderate incomes (LMI) in the U.S., and the role that employers have in ensuring the financial security of impacted workers. This infographic explores several key findings from the research such as changes in their work and who are most likely to be affected. It  also highlights the critical need for employers to support workers affected by extreme or unusual weather.
