# **530A (Trump) Accounts: Messaging Essentials** Ready-to-use messaging for communicating with families about 530A (Trump) Accounts. **What This Is** This document contains language about 530A (Trump) Accounts that Commonwealth tested with nearly 1,100 eligible families. It is written for you to use with the families your organization serves: your members, customers, employees, clients, or constituents. Use it as written, or adapt it to your voice and channels. Two companion documents go with it: the 530A Guidance for your organization type, and the 530A AI Prompt Library for generating your own customized materials utilizing this language. **Research Methodology** Building on earlier research into family perceptions of 530A (Trump) Accounts, Commonwealth surveyed nearly 1,100 parents of children ages 10 and under living on low and moderate incomes (LMI). The survey tested messaging approaches to identify what best supports family understanding and engagement. The tools that came out of that research include: Messaging Essentials, the Partner Activation Guides, and the AI Prompt Library with its AI Prompt Guidance. **Why This Matters** 530A (Trump) Accounts offer families a new opportunity to build long-term wealth for their children and the ability to foster an investor identity from birth. Trusted organizations can help families overcome information gaps and misconceptions, understand their child’s eligibility for these accounts, and make informed decisions about participation**.** ## **How to Use the Messaging Essentials** Everything below is written for families and is ready to be tailored by your organization. You can use it as written, adapt it to your voice, or pull single lines into materials you already have. An accompanying activation guide covers how to put it to work for your organization, and the AI Prompt Library can turn it into finished drafts. ### **How to Use the 530A (Trump) Accounts Partner Toolkit** Download a context pack that includes Messaging Essentials, an Activation Guide that matches your organization type, and the AI Prompt Guidance. Then upload that context pack to the AI tool of your choice, along with your organization’s brand, voice, and compliance guidelines. Then select an AI prompt from the AI Prompt Library, add your organization’s details, and use your AI tool of choice to create customized copy, communications, and other materials. The money is invested in low-cost index funds, such as a fund that tracks the S\&P 500, and grows over time. When the child turns 18, the account transfers to them and follows traditional individual retirement account (IRA) rules. **Why It Matters** Children who are U.S. citizens and born January 1, 2025 through December 31, 2028 receive a one-time $1,000 contribution from the federal government. A family does not have to add any money of their own. Left invested, that $1,000 is estimated to reach nearly $3,000 by the time the child turns 18, and more than $44,000 by age 65, at modest returns. These are estimates, not guarantees. **Who Qualifies** Any child under the age of 18 with a valid Social Security number can hold a 530A (Trump) Account, one account per child. Children who are U.S. citizens and are born 2025 through 2028 receive the $1,000. Parents of children born outside that window can still open an account and receive contributions from family, employers, and philanthropic organizations. **What a Parent Needs to Do** Opening an account is optional and is not automatic. A parent, legal guardian, or authorized individual acts as the sole custodian until the child turns 18\. Parents manage the account through the [Trump Accounts App](https://trumpaccounts.gov/) or at [trumpaccount.com](http://trumpaccount.com). Families can add up to $5,000 a year in total. An employer can contribute up to $2,500 a year, and that counts toward the $5,000 total. Private contributions (families and friends) are made after tax and are not tax deductible. Employer contributions are tax deductible for the business and are not counted as income for the employee. Some employers may offer a way for employees to contribute before taxes. For more information, see irs.gov/trumpaccounts. . The account grows tax-deferred, which means taxes are delayed until the money is withdrawn. There are four ways to open an account, as of September 2026: > > • Online through the IRS: sign in to your IRS Individual Online Account (IOLA) with ID.me and submit Form 4547 electronically. > > • Through the [Trump Accounts app](https://trumpaccount.com/). > > • Through the official web app, trumpaccount.com. > > • With a tax return or on paper: Form 4547 can be filed with a current-year tax return, including electronically through tax software or a tax preparer, or mailed on paper following IRS instructions. **How the Account Is Managed** The accounts are held in coordination with the U.S. Department of the Treasury, Bank of New York (BNY), and Robinhood. Program facts are maintained at trumpaccounts.gov, irs.gov/trumpaccounts, and home.treasury.gov --- ## **Core Messages For Families** ### **The Money Is Real and It Costs a Family Nothing** * Eligible children born 2025 through 2028 receive $1,000 from the federal government in a 530A (Trump) Account. What’s the catch?** It is real. 530A (Trump) Accounts are a federal program, and children who are U.S. citizens and born 2025 through 2028 receive a one-time $1,000 contribution from the federal government. The one thing worth knowing is that the money is your child’s and it is for the long term. Withdrawals follow retirement account rules, similar to an individual retirement account (IRA). **Can I afford this?** Yes. No deposit is required. The $1,000 is invested and grows whether or not you ever add to it. Others can add to it too: family, friends, your employer, and philanthropic or government programs, each with their own rules. **Is this a bank product or a government program?** It is a federal program. The $1,000 comes from the federal government, and a parent opens the account in the [Trump Accounts app](https://trumpaccount.com/), at [trumpaccount.com](http://trumpaccount.com), through an IRS Individual Online Account, or by filing Form 4547 with a tax return. The accounts are held in coordination with the U.S. Department of the Treasury, Bank of New York (BNY), and Robinhood. **How does the money grow?** The $1,000 is invested in low-cost index funds and grows tax-deferred, which means taxes are delayed until the money is withdrawn. These are estimates. **How does this affect my taxes?** The $1,000 comes from the federal government and requires nothing from you. Anything you choose to add is contributed after tax and is not tax deductible. The account grows tax-deferred. When money is withdrawn, it follows traditional individual retirement account (IRA) rules. **Do I have to contribute from my paycheck?** No. The federal $1,000 is invested and grows whether or not anything is added. Contributions from friends and family are limited to $5,000 a year, and an employer contribution of up to $2,500 counts toward that total. Contributions from philanthropic organizations may also be available, with their own requirements. **Should we do this instead of a 529 plan?** It works alongside a 529 plan, but it’s not meant to replace one A 529 is for education. A 530A (Trump) Account is long-term money in your child’s name that follows retirement account rules. **My child was born before 2025\. Anything for us?** Yes. Any child under 18 with a valid Social Security number can open an account and receive contributions from family, employers, and philanthropic organizations. The account and the money in it belong to your child. **Will this count against public benefits?** How the accounts interact with public benefit programs is covered by the Congressional Research Service at congress.gov/crs-product/R48910. We can point you there, and we encourage you to talk with a benefits counselor or caseworker who can help you understand how it applies to your family. **How do I open one?** Enrollment is not automatic.
