Medical expenses are the #1 cause of bankruptcy in the US. One of the factors that is increasingly contributing to financial insecurity is health expenses. Employees with an annual household income below $55,000, who often do not have access to financial resources such as savings and affordable credit, are particularly at risk of financial insecurity imposed by unexpected health expenses. This challenge is exacerbated if one’s health plan involves a high deductible that means the employee will initially have to over costs out of pocket.
Commonwealth partnered with the Center for Health Experience Design (CHXD) to launch a design & innovation challenge to prompt the financial, healthcare, and design communities to envision novel solutions to support employees with household incomes under $55,000 to balance their health and financial needs at open enrollment.
We hosted a webinar on January 23, 2019 to share insights from our research and the winning solutions submitted as part of this design challenge that will help improve HDHP benefit offerings.
